1986. A computer system has suffered a catastrophic failure.

Its memory is corrupted. Its files are disappearing. Malicious programs have taken control of the machine, and the system is rapidly approaching complete collapse.

Deep within its failing circuits, one final recovery program remains operational.

PATCH.EXE

You are the system's last hope.

Fight your way through corrupted disk sectors, eliminate hostile programs, recover lost data and upgrade your abilities as you descend deeper into the machine.

But something is waiting at the heart of the system.

And it doesn't want you to succeed.

PURGE. RECOVER. SURVIVE.

• Fight the infection — Battle VIRUS.EXE, CORRUPT.DAT and SPAM.BAT, each with different attack behaviours.
• Explore corrupted sectors — Navigate randomly selected rooms filled with hostile programs.
• Recover lost data — Collect fragments from defeated enemies.
• Upgrade PATCH.EXE — Improve your firing speed, increase your health and strengthen your attacks.
• Survive six sectors — Fight your way towards the system's core and confront FATAL_ERROR.
• Experience old-school computing — A retro-inspired world of pixel graphics, terminal interfaces and computer errors.

DISK ERROR is a short, arcade-style, top-down roguelite inspired by classic dungeon shooters and the computers of the 1980s.

Created as a solo game jam project for Ludum Dare 60, based on the theme OLD TECH.
